The China Meteorological Administration‘s FY-4A satellite is now delivering the first operational data from onboard the Hyperspectral Infrared Sounder (GIIRS) as of yesterday, 24 April.
The FY-4A satellite mission objectives support:
- Nowcasting and severe weather warnings
- Regional and global Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP)
- Climate applications
- Environment and disaster monitoring

The GIIRS data is now available from EUMETSAT via EUMETCast Terrestrial and will be important for us and our users in preparing for the delivery of data from the Infrared Sounder (IRS) instrument onboard the future Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) series of European geostationary meteorological satellites.
